यह लिसिएसी परिवार का सदस्य है। जिसका वानस्पतिक नाम सेटाइयमलिन्न है। इसे संस्कृत में लशुनम और अंग्रेजी में गार्लिक कहते हैं। आयुर्वेद के मतानुसार लहसुन तीक्ष्ण,उत्तेजक, गुरु, स्निग्ध,बल,शुक्र और मेघावर्धक है।यह रूचि,अजीर्णअग्निमांध,वात्श्लेष्मा रोग, गुल्म, शोथ,बवासीर, मूत्ररोग, प्रमेह,, कष्टार्तव, बांझपन, रक्त विकार कुष्ठ, घेंघा, खांसी, ज्वर,यक्ष्मा,बहरापन, गठिया आदि रोगों में उपयोगी, टूटी हुई हड्डियों को जोड़ने वाला, घाव भरने वाला, पौष्टिक, रसायन एवं रक्तवर्धक भी है।यह पशुओं में होने वाले अर्बुद नामक रोग में भी हितकारी है।

यह कोलेस्ट्रॉल को कम करने वाला और एंटीसेप्टिक भी है।लहसुन में डायलाइट एवं डाईसल्फाइड नामक तत्व पाए जाते हैं,जो नाना प्रकार के रोगों को नष्ट करने में सहायक होते हैं।

कुछ अति धार्मिक प्रकृति के हिंदू लोग लहसुन का प्रयोग नहीं करते हैं क्योंकि शास्त्रों में इसे राक्षसों के शरीर से निकला हुआ कहा गया है। साथ ही इसे खाने से मुंह से दुर्गंध भी आती है।परंतु मेरे विचार से एक दुर्गुण के रहते हुए अनेक सद्गुणों को नहीं छोड़ना चाहिए। इसलिए लहसुन का प्रयोग करना चाहिए।
